Answer: Unilateralism can be defined as the disposition of the actions which is being undertaken or performed on the behalf of the one party or faction. Unilateralism thrives within the workplace where individuals or groups take decisions without much consideration to the requirements, concerns or feelings of the others (Gardner, 2015). Unilateralism often provides to the factor of disentanglement, low morale, and disturbance. Custom and practice is stated to be one of the many ways that may be oblique into the contract of employment. For an expression to be disguised by custom and practice, it needs to be certain and reasonable. In other words, the term needs to be established in well manner over a certain period of time, clear and precise and known to employees. However at times, due to work pressure or the management decision custom and practice takes a back seat. How can an employee who is working 12 hours a day to meet his daily target state that the custom and practice for him is reasonable and certain. However, according to Sebenius, (2014), there have been rules and laws that have limited the managerial unilateralism. There is a body that looks after the well-being of the employees and checks on the custom and practice that is being applied at workplace. For instance, if the employer perpetually plays improved redundancy payments, but differs the payment term, which is of inconsistent nature with legal obligation. Low morale and workplace disturbance jeopardizes the overall work process of an organization. The management should abide by the fact that limiting unilateralism would bring in more productivity and generate more revenue than augmenting it where the employees would suffer from low motivation (Thompson, 2015).
